LLPBN commends DVS response to FMD threat
The Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia (LLPBN) has commended the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) for its swift response to the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) threat in southern Namibia.
The LLPBN said the incident involved cattle that had been purchased and transported from an affected area several months earlier. After the animals were detected, the DVS activated Namibia’s national surveillance and traceability protocols.
“Veterinary teams implemented quarantine, testing and tracking procedures, which resulted in the animals being cleared. Following the response, movement restrictions in the area were partially lifted,” the LLPBN said.
The board said Namibia’s ability to manage animal health and biosecurity risks was supported by years of
investment in controlled animal health environments, strict biosecurity standards and co-operation between the government and industry stakeholders.
“Protecting Namibia’s animal health status is a shared responsibility, and the board remains steadfast in upholding the highest standards of compliance,” the LLPBN said.
The board said it would continue to follow guidelines and directives issued by the DVS as part of efforts to protect the country’s livestock industry and maintain its animal health status.
It also urged members of the public and the livestock industry to rely on official communication channels for verified information on animal health developments and to avoid spreading unverified information.
