Police arrest three for poaching elephant that killed woman

Three people have been arrested after an elephant that killed a 46-year-old woman last week in the Omusati Region was shot dead, with police treating the incident as a case of poaching. The elephant was shot on 4 March in a mahangu field at Ongulumbashe village in the Tsandi constituency. According to police, the suspects used a .303 hunting rifle to shoot the protected animal. The elephant, valued at about N$295 000, was later recovered, but had sustained injuries. The suspects were also allegedly found in possession of a firearm without a permit and ammunition without the required licence. They are further accused of supplying arms and ammunition without authorisation and failing to store the firearm safely. The suspects have been identified as Paulus Wilhelm (23), Ndeshipanda Fillemon Kaapangelwa (51) and Awala Ndinelago Inamugadhimbwa (34). Inamugadhimbwa was initially arrested in connection with the incident. The trio appeared in the Okahao Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 9 March, where they were each granted bail of N$800.
