Governor appeals for calm amid FMD outbreak

ǁKharas Governor Dawid Gertze has appealed to residents, farmers, livestock owners, traders, and other stakeholders to remain calm and vigilant after confirming a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in the region on Wednesday.

Gertze said he understands the anxiety and uncertainty the outbreak could cause, particularly among those whose livelihoods depend on livestock. “Our livestock is not merely a source of income. For many of our people, it represents years of hard work, food security, family heritage and hope for the future,” he said.

He said farmers' and livestock owners' concerns were being heard and taken seriously.

“While the restrictions may be difficult and may have economic consequences for many, our collective responsibility at this moment is to do

everything possible to prevent the situation from becoming worse. Let us therefore act with patience, responsibility and compassion towards one another,” Gertze said.

Following confirmation of the outbreak, the Directorate of Veterinary Services activated the National FMD Contingency Plan and introduced immediate movement and trade restrictions on cloven-hoofed animals and their raw products.

Gertze urged residents and livestock owners to comply with the restrictions and other directives issued by veterinary authorities. “Please do not move livestock or animal products illegally, and do not attempt to circumvent roadblocks or other control measures. Such actions could place entire communities and livelihoods at risk,” he said.

He also encouraged farmers and livestock owners to monitor their animals closely and immediately report suspected cases to their nearest state veterinary office. “Early reporting and co-operation with veterinary officials are essential in determining the extent of the outbreak and containing its spread,” Gertze said.

He urged community members not to share unverified information, rumours or messages that could create unnecessary fear and confusion. “At this difficult moment, our greatest strength will be our unity, discipline and co-operation. Let us rely on information from the Directorate of Veterinary Services, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Office of the Governor and other authorised institutions,” he said.

Gertze also acknowledged the work of veterinary officials, farmers, agricultural stakeholders, local authorities, traditional authorities and others involved in protecting the region’s livestock and livelihoods.

“As ǁKharas Region, we have faced difficult circumstances before, and we have overcome them by standing together. This too requires action, unity and self-reliance,” he said. “Let us look after one another, support our farmers and communities, and remain hopeful as the relevant authorities work to contain and manage this outbreak.”
