Driving Namibia’s green innovation forward
The National Cleantech Innovation Challenge (GCIP) in Namibia recently brought together a panel of expert judges to evaluate semi-finalists on technical excellence, commercial viability and climate impact.
This challenge serves as a flagship national platform to advance innovation-driven climate action and green industrial development.
Implemented by the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF) in partnership with Co-creation Hub (CcHUB) Namibia, the challenge forms part of GCIP Namibia’s 2026 implementation pipeline.
The event convened 15 GCIP Namibia semi-finalist ventures that had already progressed through structured screening and accelerator processes, making the challenge a critical milestone in the acceleration continuum. These high-potential entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises are developing practical, scalable and market-relevant cleantech solutions.
According to GCIP national project coordinator Johannes Munango, the challenge is designed as a performance-based platform that goes beyond visibility. “It enables rigorous technical review, enterprise positioning and structured engagement with stakeholders across government, industry, finance, academia and development cooperation. The aim is not only to showcase innovation, but also to validate, strengthen and align it with market demand.”
Strategically aligned
Munango emphasised that the initiative is strategically aligned with Namibia’s transition towards a low-carbon, inclusive and competitive economy. He highlighted the importance of localising the GCIP model through EIF and national partners to ensure the long-term sustainability of cleantech support mechanisms. This localisation is considered essential in helping innovators move from concept to market-ready solutions with measurable impact.
Namibia continues to face development challenges, including energy access gaps, water stress, resource inefficiencies and limited early-stage venture support. Munango said the National Cleantech Innovation Challenge is a strategic response to these pressures. “It aims to identify and validate high-impact innovations, strengthen enterprise readiness through competitive pitching and expert feedback, improve ecosystem coordination around finance and market access, and align entrepreneurial innovation with national priorities on green industrialisation, youth employment and climate action.”
Expected outputs include assessed pitch presentations, consolidated judges’ scores and documented recommendations for post-challenge support.
By bringing together innovators, institutions and partners on one national platform, the challenge reinforces Namibia’s commitment to innovation-led climate solutions and positions local entrepreneurs as key drivers of a more resilient, competitive and sustainable green economy.
